Jordan Comes to Toronto

Sail and Swim

We were barely out of our slip when Tony noticed the water wasn’t spitting out the stern like it should be.  Good thing we have the habit to check for water output every time we start the engine.  We made it out of the marina basin and put the anchor down to tend to the problem. It had to be one of two things; either the impeller needed to be changed or there was a clog in the cooling system.  After seeing that the impeller was fine, next step was clearing any weed and algae from the intake hose to the strainer.  Tony crawled down into the cockpit locker and found he couldn’t close the thru hull.  Jordan was happy to help Tony on this project. What followed was pulling the hose off from the strainer (it was clogged) and pulling the hose off the thru hull (thru hull was clogged).  “I remember seeing a youtube of this process, I wonder how big of a fountain we’ll have”.  Tony commented.  There was a fountain, but not as big as we imagined it might be.

Sail Around Toronto Island

It’s a great day for a sail, where shall we go?  Instead of sailing to a destination, we decided on a circumnavigation of Toronto Island.  Navigating our way out of the harbor, we noticed the variety of other boats; water taxis, barges, other sailboats.  Our favorite was sailing by a beautiful tall ship.

Let’s Take a Swim!

Toronto Island has ample beaches to anchor off and take a swim.  After Jordan jumped in, he exclaimed “it’s colder than I imagined!”.  The temperature didn’t hinder him from enjoying more jumping and swimming.  He remembered photos from Luke’s boat trip and decided to recreate a jumping off the boat pose.  I think he nailed it!

Disc Golf

When you plan a trip, how do you decide what activities to do?  Hopefully, you scout out things that interest you.  We know that Jordan plays disc golf at home, so when we saw a course on Toronto Island, we mentioned he might want to bring a few discs.

Being a hot, summer day, we had the course to ourselves which was nice to not feel rushed.  Jordan taught us all about the game, equipment, strategy, and physics involved as he played the full course.  At the last hole, Tony & I took a turn throwing the discs.   Mine made it in the basket, but I’ll need a little more coaching from Jordan on my form and throwing from a distance.

Sights Around Town

Using the public transportation, we were able to cover a lot of ground and explore different areas of Toronto.  It helped that Tony & I were familiar with Union Station and the different options of travel from when we came last winter for the boat show.  There’s so much to see and so little time!  We narrowed our list down to a manageable amount and were rewarded with a nice overview of different neighborhoods, parks, architecture, and gardens.

Food

When the weather is hot, like heat wave hot, we don’t do much cooking onboard.  We’re trying to keep the cabin temp as cool as possible, not add more heat!  As a result, we eat salads, cold sandwiches, and “lunchable” style lunches.  To up level a meat/cheese/cracker lunch, we had picked up Kangaroo meat sticks during Canal Days.  It was fun to try kangaroo, but none of us were overly impressed.

Less cooking onboard also means more eating out.  We took turns suggesting places to eat which included the deli at a nearby grocery store, a fantastic noodle restaurant, sports bar (along with good food, we also appreciated being in the AC for a bit!), and Lawrence Market.  After seeing Tim Horton’s on almost every block, it was inevitable to eat there at least once!

Beautiful Toronto

Toronto really knows how to infuse beauty in a big city.  There is no shortage of gardens, natural spaces, and interesting architecture.  Jordan and I made good use of the shade coverage in a nearby park for more than just shade.  We got caught in a downpour and waited it out under the canopy of trees.

During our day of exploring the city, it was my idea to check out the alley of murals.  In my opinion, street art adds to the beauty of a place!

Toronto is one of our favorite places to visit and all the more enjoyable to explore and experience the city (on the water and land) with our son Jordan.  Thanks for coming to Toronto Jordan!
